Crossing the Monkey Bridge
Recently Ellen MacArthur Troop welcomed 2nd Portchester Scout Group into the fold. They are maintaining their own identity, keeping their uniform and traditions, but will now be attending our troop nights as a separate patrol. We're looking forward to sharing ideas, skills and resources while making some good friendships with our closest Scouting neighbour.

One of the first joint events we held was in the field at 2nd Portchester HQ where we put our newly developed pioneering skills to good use by building a Monkey Bridge to span an imaginary chasm (see picture). There were two teams, one on each side of the ravine, each with limited poles and rope. Working together, they managed to implement the square and diagonal lashings they learnt the previous troop night to build two A-frames. Next they had to haul three lines across the crevasse and attach them securely to the A-frames. Once the bridge was lifted up it was pegged into the ground so it would stand upright on its own. Finally, the Scouts could cross safely from one side to the other.

This counts towards the Pioneering Badge
