The Scouts arrived at the village shop in the dark filled with excitement. We hoisted our packs over our shoulders and set off down the track. A few Scouts found it difficult to balance with the amount they’d packed, but we managed the short trek without anyone falling over backwards.

To everyone’s surprise and delight, the Leaders had arrived early and set up the tents. Absolute luxury! After spending a little time getting settled, we tucked into delicious spaghetti bolognaise. We then had a wide game, then hot chocolate, then bed.

The following day was where we really got started. The patrol leaders split their patrols up with separate tasks. Some went off to collect fire wood, others dug the fire pits and prepared the fires, others finished setting up the site, while the rest prepared breakfast. With the site up and running, the Scouts gathered round their fire pits and experimented with different ways of cooking. The food even turned out to be edible!

Washing up was a new experience for many of the Scouts, so it took some time to complete properly! They were then surprised to find that it was time to start preparing lunch! This cycle became the rhythm of camp. However, they seemed to enjoy it a lot.

However, we didn’t just spend the weekend cooking and washing up! We also managed to fit in a wide game, a night hike through the surrounding woodland, training in knives, axes and saws, building different ways to cross the stream, leaning about pulleys and mechanical advantage systems, and general camping skills.

All too soon camp was over and the Scouts were asking about the next one!
