Join the Adventure

Are you looking for adventures, to learn interesting new things and to make great new friends? If so, Scouts is for you.

The Scout Movement welcomes anyone and everyone, no matter who you are, who wants to get involved. By joining the Movement you become a member of a worldwide family where every member shares the same values; striving to be the best person they can be, helping others and doing their duty to humanity no matter where in the world they find themselves.

At 3rd Portchester it’s not all knots and funny shorts and hats! We offer a wide range of activities, including rowing, kayaking, gliding, caving, hiking, cycling, sailing, camping and many more. Many Scouts even go on to achieve recognised qualifications in these activities (such as BCU star awards, RYA levels in sailing and powerboating, etc.). While knots may be included in some of these activities (e.g. sailing), funny shorts and hats are entirely optional.

All this adventure is not without risk, but it's done so in a carefully managed environment with safety as our top priority. For more information see our safety and adventure fact sheet.

So, how do you start?

Young people

Bringing in the gig

At 3rd Portchester we cater for Beaver Scouts (aged 6 to 8), Cub Scouts (aged 8 to 10½), Land and Sea Scouts (aged 10½ to 14) and Explorer Scouts (14 to 18). For more information about our Sections, see the about the Group page.

If you are under the age of 18 you will need someone with parental responsibility to introduce you to us. They will need to contact one of the Leaders from the Section you’re interested in and we will help you through the process.

For more information take a look at the Parents' no-nonsense guide to scouting

Adults

Getting knotted

All of our Sections have strong, well-qualified leadership teams so you don’t have to worry about not having any skills, as we can easily train you up if you wish. But if you do have any particular skills there’s plenty of opportunity to use them and to instruct others.

We operate flexible volunteering so there’s no need to worry whether you can spare time once a week, once a month or once a year, we’re happy to have you along. There’s only one form to fill in: the Adult Information Form

If you’re interested in helping, contact one of the Leaders from the Section you’re interested in and we will help you through the process.
